Joining Hands for Hope: A Special Dashain Program and White Cane Safety Awareness day Observed

October 26, 2016 By Sushil Adhikari Leave a Comment

Bright Star Society, on October 15 Saturday, organized a half-day event with two different purposes under the single scheme: to mark the World White Cane Safety Day with white cane distribution and awareness campaign, and to celebrate Dashain festival for those adults and children with disabilities who did not get to return their homes/villages for the celebration due to different circumstances.

White Cane Safety day is a global day celebrated annually on October 15 as an international observance to spread awareness on safety, equality and independence of blind and visually-impaired highlighting the significance of white cane, promoting risk-free mobility for blind and symbolizing canes as the tool of identity and independence for the visually-impaired!

Recognizing the importance of the White Cane Day, Bright Star Society conducted the program, which, as a co-incident, was in the last day of Dashain, the greatest festival of Nepal! Hence BSS took an opportunity to feed two birds in a single plate: celebrating Dashain and White Cane day under the single event!

The program was supported by volunteers from different youth organizations and financially contributed by Nepali community of Richmond USA!

Mixed Under the two central themes, celebration and awareness, we had a unique chance of having the last day of Dashain and White Cane Safety day at the same time.

In the program, Bright Star Society distributed white canes to the visually-impaired individuals who were in need of canes for their day-to-day mobility! Not only that, Sarita Shahi, the famous singer, performed a white cane awareness song highlighting the significance of cane and barrier-free navigation for blind and visually-impaired. Along with the distribution and performance, as the part of Dashain celebration, the guests from Lions Club, Rotarac Club, the representative from Shauna Rose Kaufman Foundation and the team of Bright Star Society gave Tika, Jamara, gifts and blessings to the participants, which gave the participants a sense of family and friends in the festive mood! At the end, together everybody had a chance to talk and eat the “Bright Star Full-Moon Lunch” exchanging love and friendship!!!
